متن کاملBrachial plexus injury after median sternotomy.
Serious brachial plexus injury after median sternotomy is uncommon. However, affected patients experience considerable morbidity and their return to regular employment is often delayed. The pathogenesis of the injury is multifactorial. Wide sternal retraction is the major etiologic factor. Management is primarily conservative and should be guided by a team experienced in upper limb and hand sur...
متن کاملBrachial Plexus Injury Due to Median Sternotomy and Lima Harvesting
Objective: Brachial plexus injury is an unusual and under-recognised complication of coronary artery bypass grafting especially when internal mammary artery harvesting takes place. It is believed to be due to sternal retraction resulting in compression of the brachial plexus. Although the majority of cases are transient, there are cases where the injury is permanent and may have severe implicat...
متن کاملThe Role of MRI in the Diagnosis of Post-sternotomy Injuries of the Brachial Plexus
Brachial Plexus Injury (BPI) is an uncommon complication of median sternotomy capable of causing a permanent or transitory sensitivity and/or motor function impairment in the upper limbs. During a cardiac surgery through sternotomy, for the assessment of the thoracic cage configuration and the site of mediastinal structures, a broader surgical field may be required. If the sternal retractors ar...
متن کاملAn unusual complication of brachial plexus sheath cannulation.
A 20-gauge cannula placed via an interscalene approach in the left brachial plexus sheath of a healthy 18-yr-old male was used inadvertently for injection of 20 ml of antibiotic solution, despite clear labelling of the cannula and painful protest from the patient. The patient suffered no neurological sequelae. The treatment, possible causes and steps to avoid similar incidents are described.
